Why Do We Need an Area Assembly?

In the opening pages of The A.A. Service Manual, a powerful question is asked: Why do we need a Conference? The answer reminds us:

“We may not need a General Service Conference to ensure our own recovery. We do need it to ensure the recovery of the alcoholic who still stumbles in the darkness one short block from this room. We need it to ensure the recovery of a child being born tonight, destined for alcoholism. We need it to provide, in keeping with our Twelfth Step, a permanent haven for all alcoholics who, in the ages ahead, can find in A.A. that rebirth that brought us back to life.”

This fellowship gave us back our breath, our families, and our very lives when we had nothing left. It stands today as a living miracle of God’s grace, built by the loving hands and humble sacrifices of those who walked this path before us. Now, the quiet responsibility of this sacred inheritance rests gently with us. As our Area elections approach this September, we need members who are ready to keep that unbroken chain of love moving forward.

General service is a heartfelt invitation to come all the way in and sit all the way down in the home that saved us. Standing for an Area position requires no expertise—only a humble heart and a willingness to say “yes” to the still-suffering alcoholic. If you are ready to give back a fraction of what you have been so freely given, please step forward, trust in a Power greater than ourselves, and make yourself available to serve the future of Area 53.
